How to Know When to Repair or Replace Your Computer

· 5 min read

A practical way to decide whether a slow or broken computer is worth fixing, including age, repair cost, and what you need it to do.

Start with what's actually wrong

"Slow" and "broken" can mean very different things. A computer that takes five minutes to start may simply need an SSD and some cleanup. A computer that won't power on might need a new power supply, or it might have a failed motherboard. A proper diagnosis comes first, because the right decision depends on the cause.

Consider the computer's age

Age matters because of support, not just speed. When an operating system stops receiving security updates on your hardware, continuing to use it online becomes riskier. As a general rule, a well-built computer that's only a few years old is usually worth repairing. An older one deserves a closer look at cost.

Compare repair cost to replacement cost

A helpful rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than about half of what a comparable new computer would, replacement often makes more sense. That's not a strict rule. A high-end workstation or gaming PC may still be worth repairing at a higher cost, while an inexpensive laptop may not be.

Upgrades can change the math

Many desktops and some laptops can be upgraded. Replacing a mechanical hard drive with an SSD and adding memory are two of the most noticeable improvements for older machines, often at a fraction of the cost of a new computer.

Signs it's probably time to replace

The computer can no longer receive security updates. Multiple major parts are failing at once. It can't run the software you need, even after upgrades. The repair cost is close to the price of a new machine.

Don't forget your files

Whatever you decide, protect your data first. If the computer is still working, back up your photos and documents now. If it isn't, avoid repeated attempts to power it on and have it looked at.
